What is Becoming Freelance?

Becoming Freelance is a diary-come-newsletter created by me, Bronya. After fifteen-ish years working mostly in marketing, and a bit in media, I’ve decided to set up my own business using everything I’ve learned up ‘til now.

Learning is a huge part of my life generally. So, after absorbing lots of books, podcasts and blogs about entrepreneurialism and the freelance journey, I’ve decided to embark on that journey and record the process.

Why did you start it?

Accountability. I’ve heard that being a solo business owner, freelancer, or whatever you want to call it, can be a challenge in terms of showing up every day. You shoulder the responsibility for everything. And that’s a difficult place to be. I hope that in writing some account of this freelancer journey, I can reflect on the bits I find difficult and moments where I might not have much motivation. Maybe it will help me to recognise bad habits, patterns or causations.

Creativity. When I was younger, I bathed in creativity; some of my favourite memories were sitting in my room, soaking up fashion and culture magazines, films, making collages in my art coursework book for hours on end. Or later, venturing out into London to wander around art galleries or interview bands when I should have been at college. Ultimately, writing was the creative (non-)skill I used to blag my way into a career, and it’s a muscle I haven’t managed to exercise since finishing my master’s. I need creativity to be at least a portion of my daily life, and to make space for it via an outlet like this could be cool.

Authenticity. This is probably the character trait that draws me most to other people, and it’s hearing authentic stories from those who I closely relate to or respect that ultimately made me feel like this decision to set up my own business could be a realistic one. The way Anna Codrea-Rado writes so assuredly in ‘You’re The Business’ and the way Emma Gannon’s writing oozes freedom, creativity and self-awareness are just two examples of voices who have inspired me to dare to try and live out a dream. If providing my authentic and realistic window into freelance life, and the steps that it takes to get there—embracing telling the story with warts and all—makes a couple of people feel a bit less alone, more inspired or just better informed about all this, then that would be pretty great.

How can I get involved?

I really don’t have much of an idea of what to write about or how this will take shape, although I’m sure lots of content will make itself known over time. But I would like to hear from anyone who wants certain topics to be covered, or if there is anyone I could reach out to for an interview about the process of going freelance. I would really love to find a community of similar-minded people in the process of going about, and recording, my freelance journey.
